2018 Hyundai Kona teased ahead of LA debut: Will take on the Jeep Compass after India launch next year

The Los Angeles motor show is all set to kick-start next week and auto makers are also ready with their products to be showcased at the event. Hyundai will be coming up with its US-spec Kona crossover and the brand has recently teased it in images. Currently, there are not much details about the Hyundai Kona but it should have a resemblance to the model that is sold in other global markets. The new Hyundai Kona will be revealed with two four-cylinder petrol engine options. The standard model will draw its power from a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated mill that is capable of producing power close to 147 hp along with 179 Nm of torque. The gearbox will be a six-speed automatic unit. With this engine, the Hyundai Kona is able to achieve a top speed of 193 kmph and can sprint from a standstill to 100 kmph in a matter of 10 seconds.

On the other hand, the 1.6-litre inline four, turbocharged engine produces a maximum power output of 175 hp while the peak torque output stands at 264 Nm. The crossover gets a seven-speed dual clutch transmission with this engine. The set up helps the Kona hit a top speed of 209 kmph and the acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph takes 7.7 seconds. The car will come with both, all wheel drive and front wheel drive configurations.

As per Hyundai, the Kona offers more headroom than any of its competitors. The Hyundai Kona will come with multiple safety options like traffic collision warning, lane keep assist, driver attention warning, high beam assist and a lot more. The crossover should also be equipped with some premium features like ventilated and heated front seats, wireless smartphone charger, automatic climate control and an 8-inch infotainment system.

Currently, the Hyundai Kona is available for sale in some European countries along with South Korea that happens to be the company's home market. Expect the bookings in the US to begin by the end of the year. Talking about the India-bound model, the crossover will be based on the i20 platform with its design inspired by the i20 active. Hyundai Kona will be positioned above the Creta in the country and hence, will arrive as a more premium offering and will compete with the Jeep Compass, which presently is positioned in such as way that it has few direct competitors.
