Mumbai: 7 dead, many feared trapped as five storey building collapses in Bhendi Bazar

At least seven people were killed and 15 others were injured after a ground plus five-storey Hussain building collapsed in South Mumbai on Thursday morning.

The incident took place at around 8:30 am in Bhendi Bazar area. At least 20 more people are feared to be trapped under the debris.

Five male and two female are among those killed.

Fire brigade officials, NDRF team, and police personnel are at the incident site. Search and rescue operations are underway with the help of local residents.

The building was reportedly 100-years-old and around 10 families were residing in it. However, it is not yet clear if the building was listed as dangerous.

The injured people have been taken to the hospital and condition of five persons is said to be critical.

"Possibility of more people trapped as the incident took place in the morning and more people were inside the house," said an official from NDRF.

Mumbai has received unprecedented rains in the last few days and it is suspected to have caused sufficient damage to the old and dilapidated buildings.

Last month, at least 17 people were killed after the four-storey Siddhi-Sai Cooperative Housing Society collapsed after the pillars of the building got weakened due to renovation of a nursing home located on its ground floor.
