India's single-day COVID-19 spike drops to 55,722; 579 deaths in last 24 hours

With a spike of 55,722 new COVID-19 cases and 579 deaths in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 count crossed 75-lakh mark and reached 75,50,273 on Monday, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

As per the MoHFW, the COVID-19 count includes 7,72,055 active cases (dip by 11,256 since yesterday) and 66,63,608 cured/discharged/migrated cases (rise by 66,399 since yesterday). With 579 deaths in the last 24 hours, the total death count due to the disease has reached 1,14,610.

There's no respite for residents of Delhi and adjoining NCR as the air quality in the region continues to deteriorate. On Sunday, the Air Quality Index in parts of Gurugram remained 'very poor' while it was 'poor' in Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad.

As per data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), there was a heavy concentration of PM 2.5 and PM 10 pollutants in the air in the four districts surrounding the national capital.

As part of Unlock 5.0, schools for classes 9th to 12th are opening in Uttar Pradesh from Monday (October 19). In the schools in UP, classes will be held in two shifts. In the first shift, students of class 9 and 10 will be taught, while in the second shift students of class 11 and 12 will be classed. In the first shift, classes will be held from 8:50 am to 3:50 pm, while the second shift will be taught from 12:20 pm to 3:20 pm.
