The rupee on Tuesday weakened to 80 per US dollar for the first time in history before recovering ground as banks sold the greenback on behalf of exporters, dealers said.
The rupee weakened to a low of 80.05 against the US dollar in opening trade and was last at 79.95. It closed at 79.98 on Monday.
Dealers said they had not seen the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) making heavy market interventions, but it is likely to sell dollars if the rupee weakened well past 80.10.

Shares of two-wheeler companies were in focus with TVS Motor Company and Eicher Motors at their respective 52-week highs on the BSE in Tuesday’s intraday trade on expectation of healthy demand for vehicles on back of strong rural demand supported by favorable rabi output, increase in crop prices and opening up of schools and colleges.
Among the individual stocks, TVS Motor hit a record high at Rs 888.80, up 1 per cent, surpassed its previous high of Rs 885.85 touched on July 1, 2022. Eicher Motors hit a fresh 52-week high of Rs 3,088, up nearly 2 per cent in intraday trade today.

To provide employment opportunities to women in the public transportation sector, the Delhi government on Monday announced that it will bear 50 per cent of the cost to train them as commercial drivers, an official statement said.
As part of the scheme, the government will invite fleet owners and cab aggregators to sponsor the remaining 50 per cent of the training cost for the women drivers seeking employment in these companies, it said.

The Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court has said that the revision petition filed against the acquittal of all 32 accused persons, including former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani, the then Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, senior BJP leaders -- Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti, Vinay Katiyar, Sadhvi Ritambhara, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh -- in Babri mosque demolition case was not maintainable and hence directed its office to convert and treat the revision as criminal appeal. The Court has fixed August 1 as the next date of hearing.

The authorities of Dakshina Kannada are on high alert after a resident of Kannur in Kerala, who landed at the Mangaluru International Airport of the district, tested positive for monkeypox.
Though experts say the spread of this disease is less, a ward with 10 beds in the Government Wenlock Hospital is being reserved for monkeypox patients in Mangaluru. The authorities have swung into action and all passengers arriving from overseas are being screened and subjected to tests.

Sri Lanka's acting president Ranil Wickremesinghe on Monday declared a state of emergency in the country with immediate effect, ahead of the July 20 election for the post of the president which fell vacant after Gotabaya Rajapaksa's resignation following the popular public uprising against him.
The government gazette number 2288/30 dated Jul 17 was issued Monday morning.
The 225-member Parliament is expected to elect the new president on July 20.

The Indian luxury car market has huge growth potential but remains suppressed due to high taxation on luxury cars and unfavourable regulatory environment, as per a senior executive of German luxury carmaker Audi.
Luxury car volumes account for less than 2 per cent of the overall passenger vehicle sales annually and the sector has been more or less at the same level for the past decade.

HANOI (Reuters) - Vietnam's budget airline VietJet Aviation will launch 13 new routes between the Southeast Asian country and India later this year, the company said on Monday, noting it also planned to add more Airbus A330 planes.
The new routes to be launched from early September to early December will link Vietnam's major cities and its tourism island of Phu Quoc with Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bangalore, New Delhi and Mumbai, VietJet said in a statement.
