Coal India today refuted Nabha Power Ltd’s claim that it was unable to supply enough coal to a 700 MW plant in Punjab, forcing its recent shutdown. The L&T group company had closed the unit in Rajpura on June 3, saying it was forced to take the decision due to shortage of coal. But a Coal India Ltd (CIL) official blamed the crisis on Nabha Power itself, saying it had delayed the booking and lifting of coal allotted to it for the peak summer and paddy sowing seasons.

KOLKATA: Nearly five lakh retired employees of Coal India Limited (CIL) got a rude shock at the beginning of this month when they found that their pensions had not been remitted to their accounts, owing to what turned out to be a temporary shortage of funds.

“I have not received my pension for May till today,” NC Jha, former chairman of CIL and president of the state-run monopoly producer’s retired executives’ welfare association told ET on Wednesday.

The analyst meet made us appreciate prospects (1) of CIL outperforming in the key powergen market over the medium term and (2) outsourcing of select engines for India demand boosting bottom-line. Mandates for new export products from parent to CIL are a function of relative scale of Indian demand for such products.

With coal stock of some power stations in the national capital region falling to an alarming level, Coal India and Railways are rushing coal supplies to Dadri and Badarpur power plants of the NTPC.

A Coal India statement issued tonight said against the linked requirement of seven rakes to these plants, movement of at least 10 rakes are planned to avert the crisis.

Private power players are crying foul over the government’s instruction to Coal India (CIL) to allot coal “out of turn” to power plants owned by the central and state governments.

The development comes at a time when the gap between the plant load factors (PLFs) – capacity utilisation levels – between private and government-owned power plants continue to widen, and this decision, independent power producers claim, would further impair their ability to service debts,

In a jolt to private power producers, the government has ordered Coal India Ltd to make ‘out-of-turn’ allotment of scarce coal to central and state electricity generation companies. The order follows a Coal Ministry directive earlier this month that instructed companies like Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd to deploy rakes of coal only for power plants and not other users like captive power plants of private industries.

Calcutta: Indian Railways will prioritise the loading of coal for supply to thermal power plants till June-end in a bid to address the fast depleting stock at the generating units.

At the request of the power ministry, the railways through a May 18 circular gave a higher priority to power plants, effective from May 19 till June 30, 2018.

Contrary to the Centre’s plan to bring down coal imports, industries are seen to be sourcing more coal from foreign countries in FY19, thanks to the unresolved issue of inadequate transport mechanism to ferry the fuel from the mines to the manufacturing plants. “Coal import trend is expected to continue as power, cement and steel industries are expected to witness improvement in demand and capacity utilisation,” CARE Ratings said on Tuesday.

Coal India has decided to transfer each of its 20,000-odd executives every five years in an effort to improve their skill sets and prevent external parties from forming a nexus with employees.

The policy would lead to 4,000 transfers every year on an average. “The new transfer policy has just been implemented and will allow executives to enhance their experience in a number of fields,” a senior Coal India executive told ET.

New Delhi: The Narendra Modi-government will be putting up for auction a score of coal mines by June-end this year after tweaking some rules, besides starting work on the auctioning of around 288 iron ore and other mineral-bearing mines in the next financial year.

Top coal ministry officials said the coal auctions would be held by the end of June after incorporating changes in the way the previous auctions were held. The changes have been approved after an inter-ministry consultation.
