Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries together own about a 30% stake in Mitsubishi Motors, which traces its roots to Heavy Industries' 1917 "Mitsubishi Model A" project. About 80% of sales come from outside of Japan.

Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) oversees the North American operations of Mitsubishi Motors -- including sales, manufacturing, finance, and R&D functions. The company sells Mitsubishi brand cars and SUVs through a network of almost 400 US dealers. MMNA's manufacturing division in Normal, Illinois, builds the Eclipse, Eclipse Spyder convertible, Galant sedan, and Endeavor SUV. Other models include the Outlander SUV and Lancer sedan. The Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. company is winding down production of the Raider pickup, manufactured by Chrysler, due to diminished sales. MMNA promises to launch smaller, more fuel-efficient cars, such as the Outlander Sport SUV and the electric i-MiEV mini-car.
