Alabamans and Floridians come together in PowerSouth Energy Cooperative (formerly Alabama Electric Cooperative), which provides wholesale power services to its member-owners (20 cooperative and municipal distribution utilities and one industrial company). Its distribution members provide electric services to almost 419,000 meters in central and southern Alabama (39 counties) and western Florida (10 counties). PowerSouth Energy Cooperative operates a 2,200-mile power transmission system and has more than 1,600 MW of generating capacity from interests in fossil-fueled and hydroelectric power plants.

PowerVerde (formerly known as Vyrex) has abandoned its quest for a molecular fountain of youth. These days, it's only interested in power. The development-stage biotech company had been researching antioxidants to develop cures for respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases, and other conditions related to aging. Unable to continue funding its activities, however, Vyrex executed a reverse merger with PowerVerde, which has designed a power system that generates electricity with zero emissions. The system, created by the company's founders George Konrad and Fred Barker, uses solar-heated water to power an environmentally friendly motor.

PPL packs a powerful punch in Pennsylvania, Kentucky and the UK, where it distributes electricity to 5.2 million customers through regulated subsidiaries PPL Electric Utilities (1.4 million customers), two utilities in Kentucky (1.2 million), and Western Power Distribution Holdings (2.6 million electricity customers). The company has 19,000 MW of generating capacity and also sells energy wholesale in key US markets. Once a global power player with interests in distribution companies worldwide, the company has opted for the UK as its non-US focus. Western Power Distribution operates two of the 15 distribution networks providing electricity service in the UK -- WPD (South West) and WPD (South Wales).

Public Utility District No. 1 of Chelan County, Washington (or Chelan County PUD) provides power and water to residents of the county located in the middle of the Evergreen State. The utility operates three hydroelectric-generation facilities on or near the Columbia River that have a combined capacity of about 2,000 MW. About 30% of the district's electricity goes to its more than 47,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers; the rest is sold wholesale to other utilities operating in the northwestern US. Chelan County PUD also provides water and wastewater services to about 5,700 customers.

Public Utility District No. 1 of Clark County (Clark Public Utilities) provides utility services to residents and businesses in Clark County, Washington. Clark Public Utilities transmits and distributes electricity to more than 182,000 customers; the company generates about half of its power supply at its 250-MW gas-fired power plant and purchases the rest from other generators, including the Bonneville Power Administration. Clark Public Utilities also distributes water to about 30,000 customers and collects and treats wastewater for the City of La Center, Washington.
