Trans-Elect has elected itself as a cross-border power company. The independent transmission company owns and operates about 12,600 miles of high-voltage power lines in portions of Canada and the US. The company acts as a wholesale provider of electricity to distribution companies. It operates the former transmission assets of of US utility Consumers Energy; it is also part of an international consortium that operates the former transmission assets of Canadian power distributor TransAlta. The acquisitions were the first of their kind in the deregulating North American electricity market. Trans-Elect is also involved in several expansion projects in congested areas of the US grid.

TransAlta has transformed itself from one of Canada's largest electric utilities into a global independent power producer with assets in Australia, Canada, and the US. The company has about about 8,990 MW of operational generating capacity. It trades and markets electricity and gas in Canada and the US. Most of TransAlta's generating capacity is coal-fired; the rest comes from gas-fired, hydroelectric, and alternative-energy plants. TransAlta has sold its regulated distribution and transmission businesses to focus on power generation and marketing, primarily to industrial and wholesale customers. The company has more than 80 power plants in Australia, Canada, and the US.

Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association supplies wholesale electricity to 44 rural distribution utilities that serve about 1.5 million customers (more than 599,300 meters) in Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Wyoming (New Mexico was a late addition to the association's service region). The member-owned cooperative has a generating capacity of 3,840 MW from its interests primarily in fossil-fueled power plants, and it operates 5,270 miles of transmission lines. Tri-State Generation and Transmission also purchases power and sells its excess supply to other utilities.

Staying true to its more-than-a-century-old watery origins, Turlock Irrigation District (TID) provides irrigation services to almost 6,000 farmers in its service area (150,000 acres of farmland). The company also provides electric generation, transmission, and distribution services to more than 98,000 retail customers in and around Turlock, California, and it sells power to wholesale customers. TID became a generator and distributor of electricity in 1923. The district provides electric service to its customer base in a 662-sq.-ml. service area encompassing portions of Merced, Stanislaus, and Tuolumne counties.

UIL Holdings, parent of electric utility The United Illuminating Company (UI), hopes its well regulated business will result in regular revenue growth. The public utility distributes electricity to 325,000 customers in southwestern Connecticut. Its service area, largely urban and suburban, includes the principal cities of Bridgeport (population 137,000) and New Haven (population 124,000) and their surrounding areas. UIL Holdings has teamed up with NRG Energy to form GenConn Energy LLC, a joint venture that focuses on developing new power generation facilities in Connecticut. In 2010 the company acquired three gas utilies in New England from IBERDROLA USA for $1.3 billion.
