Italcementi is the colossus of roads. Italcementi S.p.A. produces cement, ready-mix concrete, aggregates, and related construction materials through more than two dozen subsidiaries on four continents. European customers dominate sales, but Italcementi also does business in North America (through Essroc), and has seen sales in other markets coming on strong in recent years. Italcementi's cement division accounts for almost two-thirds of total sales and produces some 70 million tons annually; concrete and aggregates account for more than 30%. Its international operations include about 60 cement plants, 15 grinding centers, 130 quarries, and 600 concrete plants. Italmobiliare owns some 59% of Italcementi.

Founded in 1902 by John Wainwright and John Luff, the company remains family-owned. John Wainwright and Co sticks to the surface of the road-paving business. The company supplies aggregates and asphalt to construction companies in the UK. Its three main products are roadstone (a crushed basalt mixture used as the top layer of the road surface), surface dressing chippings, and coated materials that offer skid resistance when vehicle tires come in contact with the pavement. John Wainwright extracts rocks and raw materials from the Moons Hill and Stoke quarries.

Lafarge Cement UK, a subsidiary of Paris-based Lafarge, pours it on the competition. With about 6 cement plants located throughout the UK, the company supplies about 40% of the country's market. Major products include Portland cements and Portland composite cements, high performance cements (heat resistant, sulfate resistant, rapid setting), and special cements (shrinkage compensated concrete, granulated blast furnace slag, pulverized fuel ash, and Portland-slag cement). It also produces plasterboard. Lafarge made it big in the UK when it acquired Blue Circle Industries in 2001; Lafarge Cement UK still uses the Blue Circle name to sell its cement.

Lafarge Malayan Cement makes and sells cement, ready-mix concrete, and other building materials. Its cement products include masonry, blastfurnace, pulverized-fly ash, and sulphate-resisting Portland cement. Lafarge Malayan Cement is the largest cement producer in Malaysia with a market share of some 45%; it has three cement plants, about a dozen sales offices, one grinding plant, one dry-mix plant, and five terminals throughout the country. Lafarge Malayan Cement Bhd began in 1950 as Malayan Cement, a subsidiary of the UK's Blue Circle Industries. In 2001 the French firm Lafarge, the world's largest cement maker, purchased Blue Circle.

Lafarge North America is at the foundation of buildings, roads, and bridges across US and Canada. One of North America's largest building materials manufacturers, the company operates around 600 concrete plants, aggregate plants, and cement plants in the US and Canada (through Lafarge Canada). Its products include asphalt, aggregates, gypsum wallboard, ready-mixed concrete, and concrete pipes and blocks. The products are used to build commercial, residential, transportation, public, and utilities projects. Lafarge North America is part of global building conglomerate Lafarge Group, based in France. It accounts for about 20% of its parent's sales.
