LightSquared (formerly SkyTerra) has staked a claim on the satellite communications market. The company provides voice and data communications to subscribers in North America via two geostationary satellites. LightSquared sells directly and through a group of about 40 dealers and resellers. The company also markets bulk capacity to other wireless service providers. In 2010 Harbinger Capital Partners bought the 52% of SkyTerra that it did not already own for $262 million in cash; it combined the company with other investments to form LightSquared.
