Turkcell talks a lot of turkey. The dominant mobile phone operator in Turkey has more than 35 million subscribers, almost half the country's population. Turkcell operates a digital GSM (global system for mobile communications) network throughout Turkey for mobile voice and data services, while international coverage is offered through agreements with foreign providers. Turkcell has operations in six other countries across the Black Sea through equity stakes in subsidiaries. Founding investors include conglomerate Çukurova Group, Russian conglomerate Alfa Group, and Finnish telecom company TeliaSonera. A holding company controlled by Alfa and Çukurova owns 51% of Turkcell. TeliaSonera controls another 13%.

Communication is a two-way street, and TuWay Communications (formerly TuWay Wireless) knows it works both ways. TuWay designs, installs, and maintains wireless communication systems for the public safety, health care, and education sectors, as well as businesses. It offers two-way radio systems, voice-logging recorders, local and regional dispatch services, in-house and wide-area paging systems, wireless data systems, and VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) services. President Bill Landis owns the company, which was founded in 1954 to service Motorola products.

Ulticom makes signaling software used to connect Internet and telecom service providers' switching and messaging systems and manage routing and billing information. Ulticom's Signalware software lets communications providers offer such services as voice-activated dialing, text messaging, and Internet call-waiting. The company has served clients including Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia Siemens. Ulticom gets about three-quarters of its sales outside the US. Comverse Technology owns about two-thirds of Ulticom, which it spun off in 2000. The company agreed to be acquired by buyout firm Platinum Equity for about $90 million.

Uniden makes communication more convenient, with no strings attached. A leading manufacturer of wireless communications devices, the company makes cordless and voice-over-IP (VoIP) telephones for the consumer and business markets. Other consumer products include LCD televisions, digital television tuners, scanners, radar detectors, portable car navigation systems, CB radios, and marine electronics. The company has development and manufacturing operations in China, Japan, and Vietnam. It also has marketing arms in Australia, Belgium, New Zealand, and the US.

Unilava hopes to keep the world talking. The company owns Nevada-based Telava Networks, which provides hosted VoIP telephone and wireless broadband Internet services to residential and commercial customers primarily in the midwestern and southern US. It also offers advertising and Web services for businesses. Formerly named IWI Holding, the company sold its Imperial World jewelry business and shifted its focus to telecommunications in 2009 with the acquisitions of Telava and long-distance telephone and Internet services provider IBFA. It plans to continue expanding its array of telecom services and the reach of its network through future acquisitions. Unilava is controlled by JK Advisers Hedge Fund.
