Abu Dhabi United Group, an investment concern owned by the government of the United Arab Emirates, acquired the club in 2008 from Thaksin Shinawatra, formerly the prime minister of Thailand. Shinawatra had acquired control of Manchester City the previous year after being ousted from Thailand in a coup d'etat.
