AUTOBACS STRAUSS INC.

AUTOBACS STRAUSS INC.

Strauss Discount Auto was founded in 1919 by two friends named Herman Schlenger and Harry Roth. Their first store, located on a street corner in Newark New Jersey, was originally known as Roth & Schlenger Home and Auto Supplies. Due to the financial success of the company, Roth & Schlenger Home and Auto Supplies (R&S) continued to expand by opening retail stores throughout the northern New Jersey region. In 1954, R&S Home and Auto opened its first superstore, a one of kind store within its time. This was the first store to include a service garage and repair facility as well as the amenity of customer parking.

AUTOBACS STRAUSS (dba Strauss Discount Auto) operates about 85 auto-parts stores in New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Strauss Discount Auto stores sell about 250,000 items, including accessories and car-care products, as well as hard parts such as batteries, mufflers, radiators, and spark plugs, tires, and tools. (About 70 of its locations offer repair service.) The company was created in 1982 through the acquisition of Strauss, a New York City auto-parts chain founded in 1919, by R&S Auto. It was later acquired by Japan's AUTOBACS SEVEN CO. in 2007.
