A calm presence in the volatile oil and gas industry, Placid Refining owns and operates the Port Allen refinery in Louisiana, which converts crude oil into a number of petroleum products, including diesel, ethanol, gasoline, liquid petroleum gas, jet fuel, and fuel oils. Placid Refining's refinery has the capacity to process 55,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The company is one of the largest employers and taxpayers in West Baton Rouge Parish. Placid Refining, which is controlled by Petro-Hunt, distribute fuels across a dozen states in the southeastern US, from Texas to Virginia, and is a major supplier of jet fuel to the US military.

Crudely moving into the private market, Polski Koncern Naftowy ORLEN is the largest refiner and distributor of oil in Poland. The company owns a total of seven refineries (including three in the Czech Republic and one in Lithuania) and has some 2,700 retail sites in the Czech Republic, Germany, Lithuania, and Poland. PKN ORLEN owns an 85% stake in chemical maker Anwil, has holdings in several other Polish companies, and controls Czech refiner and retailer Unipetrol. Two former state monopolies, Petrochemia Plock (Poland's largest refinery) and Centrala Produktow Naftowych (Poland's #1 petroleum distributor), merged in 1999 to create PKN ORLEN. The Polish government still owns 10% of the company.

Swedish oil refining, Saudi ownership. Preem Petroleum, the largest oil refining company in Sweden, operates two refineries and a network of about 500 service stations nationwide. Its refineries, Preemraff Lysekil and Preemraff Gothenburg, process 16 million tons of oil annually, making Preem the largest refiner in the Nordic region. The refining and marketing company purchases about 50% of its crude oil supply from the North Sea and 47% from Russia. It exports about two-thirds of its refined products. Preem is controlled by Saudi Arabian investor Mohammed Hussein Ali Al-Amoudi.
