Central Railway was formed on 5th November 1951 by combining the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, Nizam State Railway and Scindia/Dholpur State Railways, consequent to integration of Indian State Railways with the Indian Government Railways, following the complete reorganization of the Indian Railway system. Since then the Railway network on Central Railway have been constantly expanding mainly by way of Doubling & New Lines.

Pipavav Railway Corporation Ltd. (PRCL) is the 50:50 Joint Venture Company of Indian Railways and the Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd (GPPL), set up to construct, maintain and operate 271 kilometers long broad gauge railway line connecting Port of Pipavav to Surendranagar Junction of Western Railway, in the state of Gujarat. PRCL is the first infrastructure modal of Public - Private Partnership in rail transportation. PRCL enjoys the status of a Railway Administration, under Railway Act, 1989.

Indian Railways have set up this Institute at Nasik Road for imparting training to Probationers of Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE) , recruited through Indian Engineering Services. In addition, IRIEEN also conducts training courses for the serving electrical engineers of Indian Railways.

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC), is a public sector enterprise under the Government of India - Ministry of Railways and is the single window interface for providing complete travel and tourism solutions for the various customer segments and is also taking over catering on trains and at stations over the Indian Railway network. IRCTC runs tour packages all over India, covering a variety of tourist interests and requirements. These packages are primarily run on an all inclusive basis, including rail travel, road travel, hotel accommodation, sightseeing as well as on board & off board hospitality.

After commencement of first Railway service between Mumbai & Thane in 1853, first electric train was run between Mumbai & Thane in year 1925 i.e., roughly after 75 years of Railway working. With industrial growth of the country & increasing need for environment friendly mode of transportation, focus in Indian Railways gradually shifted to electric traction. After independence of the country, first 5 year plan (1951-56) had a small target of electrification of 141 RKM of tracks. The target kept gradually increasing and 12th five year plan (2012-17) has a challenging target of electrification of 6500 RKM of tracks.
