West Bengal govt announces complete lockdown across state on Thursday, Saturday

Amid the unabated rise of coronavirus cases in West Bengal, the state government on Monday said it will impose complete lockdown on two days of the week in addition to broad-based lockdown in containment zones..

Complete lockdown will be in force across West Bengal on Thursday and Saturday this week, state Home Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay said.

Bandyopadhyay also admitted that the state has seen community transmission of COVID-19 in few areas.

Earlier, the West Bengal government headed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee imposed a complete lockdown in the containment and buffer zones, barring essential services, from July 9 till July 19.

This lockdown in containment zones will continue, Bandyopadhyay said.

All banks in the state will also remain closed on Saturday and Sunday. They will maintain 5-day working week and customers will be provided services on working days from 10 am to 2 pm.

According to the latest available data, the number of positive COVID-19 cases in West Bengal has surged to 42,487, with the majority of cases from Kolkata, North 24 Parganas and Howrah districts.

The case tally in the state includes 16,492 active cases and 1,112 deaths.

India saw a record single-day jump of 40,425 COVID cases, pushing its tally past the 11-lakh mark on Monday, while the total number of recoveries crossed 7 lakh, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The death toll due to the disease rose to 27,497 with 681 fatalities reported in one day.
