Nifty hovers around 8,050; metal shares gain

Benchmark indices are off day’s high and are trading in a narrow range with positive bias after investors booked profits at higher levels.

The positive trend is led by select buying among IT, Power and Metal segments. However, the upside is capped due to mild selling among banks, capital goods and consumer durables sectors.

Tata Motors appoints Lionel Messi as global brand ambassador

Mumbai: Ace footballer Lionel Messi will endorse Tata cars and utility vehicles (UVs) in India and globally, Tata Motors Ltd said in a statement on Monday. The decision to appoint a brand ambassador, for the first time, comes as the maker of Nano, Indica, Safari, Zest and Bolt brands struggles to connect with the young, upwardly mobile car buyers in a competitive car market, where rivals such as Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, Hyundai Motor India Ltd and Honda Cars Ltd have had greater success.

Nasscom raises concerns about UK’s move to curb skilled visas

Bengaluru: India’s software trade lobby group National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) has submitted a memo to a UK panel of immigration advisors flagging concerns about the government’s proposed move to curb migration of skilled foreign workers into the country.

In the memo, submitted on 25 September in response to the Migration Advisory Committee’s call for comments from all stakeholders in the visa process, Nasscom argued any curbs will significantly increase the operating cost of businesses in the UK and force companies to export job overseas to stay competitive.

ITC: time to tap into margins for growth

ITC: time to tap into margins for growth

It is tempting to conclude that ITC Ltd is caught in a bad situation. Its cigarettes business is barely growing, its fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) business is no longer the growth driver it used to be, and a weak business environment has hit its paper business. Even agricultural commodity trading revenues have declined because of weak trading conditions. The hotels division has done relatively better in recent quarters, but is not a significant contributor to revenue.

Wipro seeks to streamline various internal processes via start-up tech

Wipro Ltd is turning to a start-up for technology which the country’s third largest software exporter believes will help it automate a lot of internal processes. The move is the first such engagement where a large Indian IT company is using the technology of a start-up to become a nimble organization.

Significantly, this move by Wipro could prompt other technology firms in the country to deploy technologies to improve the way they do business, according to a few experts.

NTPC eyes overseas spot markets for cheaper RLNG

NTPC eyes overseas spot markets for cheaper RLNG

State-run NTPC is looking to source low-cost re-gasified liquid natural gas (RLNG) from spot markets overseas to improve its margins that have taken a hit in recent quarters. While the cost of coal, on which over 90% of the company’s power generation depends, has remained flat, it is circumscribed by the norm that the revenue from power produced from subsidised gas can be used only to service debt.

The subsidy policy is basically aimed at running some stranded gas-based pants and ensure a mechanism for debt servicing, so that these assets don’t become NPAs.
