Telecom industry analysts said the recent government decision for easing of norms to share or trade underutilised spectrum could make Reliance Jio go for hard bargaining with potential seller Reliance Communication (RCom) as the rules have made spectrum trading costlier.

According to the spectrum trading guidelines, a telecom operator can share or trade their underutilised spectrum obtained via auction.

KOLKATA: The spectrum trading rules could put a spanner in the ongoing, exclusive merger talks between Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications (RCom) and Russia's Sistema JSFC as the deal cost may swell by an extra $600 million (roughly Rs 3,980 crore), two senior executives aware of the matter said.

This is since the rules approved by the government on Wednesday say that for 800 MHz airwaves acquired in the March 13 auctions, trading will be allowed only if the differential of the price discovered in the latest auction (March 2015) and the March 2013 price on the balance period is paid to the government.

The Cabinet cleared spectrum trading guidelines on Wednesday under which telecom operators will be able to sell radiowaves to other service providers, a move that will help address the problem of spectrum shortage.

Cheering the announcement, share price of Reliance Communication surged 11.57 per cent to Rs 62.20, followed by Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular which gained 2.44 per cent and 2.12 per cent at Rs 355.20 and Rs 149.20, respectively, on Wednesday. Sensex closed 1.59 per cent higher at 25,719.58.

Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group has expressed a keen interest in playing a larger role in the growing economic ties between India and Qatar by expanding business cooperation with the Gulf country.

Ambani called on Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani among other senior Qatari ministers during a visit to the oil-rich country yesterday.

Reliance Communications (RCom), part of the Anil Ambani-led group, has partnered with global Internet of Things (IoT) platform leader Jasper to enable enterprises throughout India to launch, manage and monetise next-generation IoT businesses, the company said in a filing in the Bombay Stock Exchange on Thursday.

RCom is Jasper's sole telecom partner in India.

Reliance Communications Ltd, India's fourth-biggest mobile phone carrier, said it had received non-binding bids from a number of interested buyers for the sale of a majority stake in Reliance Infratel, its tower unit.

Reliance Communications' shares jumped more than 4% after the announcement.

KOLKATA: With the Narendra Modi government allowing spectrum sharing, Reliance Communications (RCOM) and Reliance Jio Infocomm are set to ink a pact that will enable the Mukesh Ambani-owned telco to offer fourth generation (4G) services over the 800 MHz band across 10 circles.

The airwaves sharing pact will allow Reliance Jio to access 10 MHz of contiguous 4G bandwidth in Mumbai, UP-East, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Northeast, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, a person familiar with the matter told ET.

MUMBAI: The story goes that some months ago an investor expressed impatience with Idea Cellular's stance that the Indian consumer wasn't ready for 4G or next-generation, high-speed network technology.

The investor suggested that this belief was misplaced, given that the competition was very busy on this front.

Telecom operator Reliance Communications (RCom) is in talks with American Tower Company (ATC) and Carlyle to sell a majority stake in its tower subsidiary Reliance Infratel in the current financial year.

In a clarification to BSE exchange over a media report that said ATC and Carlyle lead race for a majority stake in Reliance Infratel, RCom said, "The company has started a process to monetise the valuable tower and fibre assets held in its subsidiary, Reliance Infratel, within the current financial year."

Shares of Reliance Communications have moved higher by 8% to Rs 62.95, bouncing back 11% from intra-day low on the BSE after multiple block deals were executed in the counter.

At 1208 hours, around 42.45 million shares have changed hands at price of Rs 58.35 on the BSE, the exchange data shows.
