Highway construction grew 20 pct in 2017-18

Construction of highways hit 27 km/day in 2017-18, clocking a 20% growth over the 22.5 km/day in the previous fiscal, though the improved rate is a far cry from the government’s target to build roads at a scorching pace of 41 km/day.

Highway construction has been a priority for the Modi government. When the new dispensation took over in May 2014, the construction rate was at 11.67 km per day.

Highways authority plans equity funding mechanism

New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is working on an equity-funding model for its upcoming expressway and economic corridor projects, auctioning them before they are built. The idea, a first for the state-run authority, comes after the success of the authority’s toll-operate-transfer (ToT) model.

The model will be tried for NHAI’s greenfield expressway projects under the Rs5.35 trillion-Bharatmala programme where 34,800km of national highways will be developed.

Border, Northeast push take ministry ahead of NHAI in road project awards

More than 15 years ago, the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) -led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government of the time made an incumbent's election pitch around the so-called ‘India Shining’. Key to this pitch was the ‘Golden Quadrilateral’ project of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

Today, a decade and a half later, under another BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, the scenario is quite different – now, it is the road transport ministry that seems to be calling the shots, not NHAI.

“We are now thinking of forming subsidiaries. The process might start early in the next financial year,” NHAI chairman Deepak Kumar told FE.
