Amazon.com has steadily added options for customers to receive their packages including in car trunks, inside home garages and potentially by drone. On Thursday, Amazon added another alternative for U.S. customers: Walk into a nearby retailer and pick up an Amazon package over the counter. The new option, called Counter, will launch with pharmacy Rite Aid Corp offering the service in 100 stores, with an expansion to 1,500 stores by year’s end, the companies said.

India has told foreign e-commerce firms such as Amazon and Walmart's Flipkart that they must ensure compliance with new foreign investment rules aimed at deterring them from providing steep online discounts, three sources familiar with the discussions told Reuters.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has said that while the government was prepared to listen to concerns about its new foreign direct investment rules (FDI), it was committed to protecting small traders from predatory behaviour by foreign-funded companies, the sources said.

Amazon India Senior Vice-President and Country Head Amit Agarwal has been named as the new chairman of Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) on Tuesday. He succeeds former Google India MD Rajan Anandan.

“Agarwal assumes office at a time when the industry is going through a growth trajectory with more than 500 million internet users in India,” IAMAI said in a statement.

Online retailer Amazon has invested Rs 450 crore in its digital payments arm Amazon Pay (India). The funding would help the Seattle-based company tap India's booming digital payments market and compete with Walmart-owned PhonePe, Alibaba-backed Paytm, and Google's mobile payment service Google Pay.

The funding came from Singapore-based Amazon Corporate and Mauritius-based entity Amazon.com, according to regulatory documents filed by Amazon, which were sourced from business intelligence platform Tofler.

The new market share numbers were reported earlier Thursday by the Information.

Amazon.com Inc said on Tuesday it would end its U.S. restaurant food delivery service on June 24, giving in to intense competition from GrubHub Inc, DoorDash, Uber Technologies' Uber Eats services.

"A small fraction of Amazon employees are affected by this decision, and many of those affected have already found new roles at Amazon," the company said in a statement. "Employees will be offered personalized support to find a new role within, or outside of, the company."

The brand value of Amazon surged by 52 per cent to USD 315 billion, global market research agency Kantar said in its 2019 100 Top BrandZ report.
