Stella-Jones is under pressure. In addition to utility poles, the company produces pressure-treated timber and railway ties from species that include maple, oak, ash, birch, pine, hemlock, and Douglas fir. It also produces marine and foundation pilings, guardrails, and other industrial treated wood products and such consumer products as dimension lumber, fence board, and plywood. Stella-Jones expanded its capabilities in the US railway tie market in 2010 with the acquisition of Tangent Rail. James Jones & Sons Limited (forest products, UK) and Stella SpA, through the Stella Jones International S.A. joint venture, control a majority of Stella-Jones Inc.

Taylor Lumber makes a lot of good wood. The company produces hardwood lumber and flooring for the construction industry. It purchases logs (white and red oak, ash, cherry, walnut, hickory, and hard maple) from within a 300-mile radius of its southern Ohio location to produce its lumber. Taylor Lumber is capable of producing and shipping 100,000 ft. of plain sawn and rift and quartered lumber a day. Its flooring plant can manufacture 25,000 sq. ft. of hardwood plank a day, sold as Taylor Brand Solid Flooring and McDermott Series Engineered Flooring. It ships to more than 40 countries throughout the world. Founded in 1882, Taylor Lumber was acquired by Resilience Capital Partners in 2010.

Tembec is the little mill that could -- and did. Rescued by workers from a shuttered mill in 1973, the forest products company today maintains significant operations in the US, Canada, and France. Through about 30 manufacturing facilities it produces pulp, paper, paperboard, lumber, and chemicals from the by-products of its pulping process; these products are marketed worldwide. Tembec's pulp unit, the company's largest group, accounts for more than half of sales. Its wood products unit sells SPF (spruce-pine-fir) lumber and hardwood flooring products primarily in North America. Tembec also manages forest land in four Canadian provinces. Outside of North America, it has sales offices in Asia.

Tenon has neatly dovetailed its Kiwi and American operations in the pine-products business. The company (formerly Fletcher Challenge Forests) processes Radiata pine from New Zealand and makes such products as molding and millwork, primarily for the US market. Through subsidiaries, the group supplies finished moldings and boards to such customers as The Home Depot and Lowe's; it also provides appearance-grade lumber to other molding and millwork makers. Operating units include the Empire Company, Fletcher Wood Solutions, Ornamental Mouldings, and Southwest Mouldings. Rubicon Forests Limited controls more than 55% of Tenon.

TerraMai is in the business of recycling; recycling wood, that is. The company supplies flooring, siding, decking, and other products made from reclaimed wood (reused or recycled wood). TerraMai seeks out reclaimed wood from around the world; the wood can come from a variety of sources such as old buildings and structures, railroad ties, fences, or wine barrels. The company then recycles the wood and sells the finished products to commercial and residential customers in the US. TerraMai has served customers including Whole Foods, Urban Outfitters, and Jamba Juice. With roots that go back to 1991, the company was founded by Richard McFarland and Erika Carpenter and is headed by CEO Ken Westrick.
