SURAT CITY SELECTED FOR BEST SMART CITY AWARD

To encourage Smart Cities, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has announced nine awards in three categories that include Project Award, Innovative Idea Award and City Award under the India Smart Cities Awards.

Surat city has been selected for the best city award under the Smart City Mission’s award for showing great momentum in implementation of projects especially in the categories of urban environment, transport and mobility and sustainable integrated development. Bhopal and Ahmedabad have been selected as joint winners for their Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) and Safe and Secure Ahmedabad (SASA) Project respectively under innovative idea award category.

Officials said that Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) will develop seven new town planning schemes as Visual Impact Areas (VIA) under its Smart City project. The VIAs will have LED screen displays to give information to people on air quality, multi-utility ducting, smart dustbins, smart lighting, smart street poles, roads with cycling tracks, smart parking, transportation and footpaths among other things.

According to the Ministry’s statement, the Innovative Idea award is being given to a project/idea particularly remarkable for its innovative, bottom-up and transformative approach towards achievement of sustainable integrated development.

“The Project awards are being given to most innovative and successful projects in seven categories that have been completed by April 1, 2018,” the statement said.
