XISS is rare business school focusing exclusively on rural management and also for empowering the poor through leadership. The XISS movement started more than half a century earlier culminated in a full fledged business school around 1995 which has since then grown from strength to strength and today it is considered as one of the best B-schools of the country anchored to the realities of the Indian economy which is predominantly rural and agrarian. The school focuses its academics and pedagogy to the needs of the society. It is well networked with the corporate sector and the institutions and has been regularly sending out its students to take up leadership positions and the alumni of XISS have risen to high positions particularly in the development and NGO sector over the years. Founded by the Society of Jesus half a century ago as a Centre of Social Service offering a Post-Graduate Diploma Programme in Social Service that was spread over nine months the school has built on its academic offerings systematically. The primary purpose of the Centre was to serve the interests of the poor and the needy ones. Inspired by this outlook, the staff identified the visually impaired of the town, organised them into a cooperative and helped them earn their bread and butter and manage their families. The Centre also helped them learn vocational skills one such activity included cane weaving. This skill was utilized in weaving new cane-chairs as well as repairing the old ones. Both the raw material (cane) and the market for the finished goods were taken care of by the Centre. Another part of the Social Work included cleaning gutters, canals, roads of Dom Tola, Lohra Tola, Dhumsa Tola and Gungu toil-one of the most unkempt slums of Ranchi. The Social Service Course, which began as one-year course, was developed into a two-year postgraduate course and specialisations were offered in Labour Welfare, Rural Development and Family Welfare. |
