If Porter-Cable asked us, we'd tell them to rename this workhorse, because calling it just a finishing sander doesn't do it justice. Of course, it does a remarkable job at higher grits as a finishing sander, leaving no swirl marks. But stick an adhesive 80 grit on this puppy, and you also have an aggressive stock remover. The reason a random orbit sander, and this one in particular, is such a great choice is because instead of simply rotating, the round head also jiggles--to use a highly technical term--eliminating those disappointing swirl marks, which seem to only show their ugly selves after the finish has been applied. But Porter-Cable's Quicksand has really captured our fancy because of its power. The dust-collection system on the Quicksand receives a gold star from us. It's compact and out of the way, but more importantly, it's efficient. Five holes in the head and adhesive discs draw sawdust up into the collection cup. The collection canister on this model hangs on tight even in hard suction circumstances, and doesn't want to pop off the way canisters on some sanders do. There's also a pad control feature that slows the 12,000 rpm to 400 or fewer when the user lifts the head away from the work surface, reducing the risk of gouging. The tool is comfortable to hold either at the top or around the housing--when doing a big job, switch between the two positions and you shouldn't feel any fatigue. Finally, for people trying to decide between this model and Porter-Cable's 333 sander, the only real difference is in what type of sanding discs they use. This model uses adhesive-backed sanding discs, and the model 333 uses hook and loop discs. Other than that, they're essentially the same machine, and whichever you prefer, we think you'll be happy with the results. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste

A beefy 2.4 amp motor gives this sander plenty of power for aggressive action, while a pad control feature prevents pad spin-up. Since the pad does not spin up to full speed until after it is in contact with the workpiece, gouges and swirl marks are prevented. The 3/32-inch orbit and 12,000 orbits per minute speed give an exceptionally smooth finish. The 5-inch pad accepts adhesive-back abrasives. The exclusive Sandtrap hard dust canister is durable, yet lightweight and porous to collect fine dust without collapsing or wearing out. With 100-percent ball bearing construction, this unit is built for reliability. The palm-grip design is comfortable for all day use.
