"The simpler, the better" is the rule of thumb when making fun-shaped food. And while it's not impossible to produce dino-pancakes and eggs with this set of Norpro Dinosaur Rings, it does take a modicum of trial and error. A more compact dinosaur, such as the squat stegosaurus, would have been a better pattern choice than the long-necked, long-tailed allosaurus, which thins out at the extremities and measures a whopping 8 inches wide. The problem really occurs in the flipping. This makes one long and flimsy cake that almost requires two spatulas to turn. Although the rings lie flat on your seasoned griddle or fry pan, you might need an extra set of hands to help hold them steady as you pour batter or crack eggs into them. The thicker the batter, the less the seepage and the more successful the shape. Prime with cooking oil. Wash thoroughly after each use. --Carol Gnojewski
