The story revolves around the band's struggle for its "big break." The members all live in Mrs. McCorkle's boarding house and spend their time practicing on the roof. When Jimmy Haskell (Stewart) arrives in town and immediately meets Molly (Goddard) and the band, Jimmy soon has the band on his music-hating uncle's radio show, "The Haskell Happy Hour"--and from there it's straight to the top! The film includes such splashy swing numbers as "When Johnny Toots His Horn," "Pete the Piper," "Do You Believe in Fairy Tales?" and "A Knife, a Fork, and a Spoon." The most spectacular scene in the movie includes sixteen rumba-dancing couples, a twelve-piece rumba band, Horace Heidt's Thirty Musical Knights, and one hundred extras in a magnificent country club setting.
