On the evening of December 7, 1998, a host of stars turned out for a spectacular 50th anniversary tribute to one of the best-loved and most influential singers of our time, Mr. Tony Bennett. Dubbed An All-Star Tribute, the event comprised the 10th installment of Live by Request, the critically acclaimed, Emmy Award-winning live music series created by Mr. Bennett in 1996. This DVD is a complete record of that star-studded evening, and includes spoken testimonials to Mr. Bennett's artistry from a wide array of musicians representing nearly every genre of music (Billy Joel, Elvis Costello, Burt Bacharach, Kiss, Madonna, and Sting), as well as tributes from the worlds of film, television, and Broadway (George Clooney, Billy Crystal, Cameron Diaz, Harrison Ford, Matt Lauer, Gregory Peck, and Joe Pesci). Because having the fans call the shots is at the very center of Mr. Bennett's concept for the Live by Request series, An All-Star Tribute also features Bennett aficionados phoning in from across the country to request their favorite songs, including such classics as "Fly Me to the Moon," "Steppin' Out with My Baby," "It Was Me," "They Can't Take That Away from Me," "For Once in My Life," Watch What Happens," "Chicago," and "The Good Life." Also included are musical tributes from country music superstar Clint Black, who pays homage to Tony Bennett's take on the Hank Williams classic "Cold, Cold Heart" and songstress Natalie Cole, who covers the Bennett classic "Smile," among many other suprises.
