Reviews for Oh My Goddess (Vol. 1) (1997)

Amazon.com
Kosuke Fujishima's delightful Oh My Goddess! began as a manga in 1988 and was made into a five-part OAV in 1993-94. Fujishima used bits of Western mythology for his offbeat romantic comedy: the three sister-goddesses are based on the Norns, the Fates in Scandinavian legends. Keiichi Morisato is a familiar anime type: a short, skinny nerd at the bottom of the pecking order. One afternoon, while he's stuck in his dorm taking phone messages for his older classmates and trying to order lunch, the lovely Belldandy appears and declares she is a goddess who will grant him one wish. Convinced she's part of an elaborate prank, Keiichi asks her to become his girlfriend forever--and is dumbfounded when she grants his wish. Her presence gets him kicked out of the all-male dorm, so they set up housekeeping in an abandoned temple. What should be an idyllic existence is soon complicated by the arrival of Megumi, Keiichi's kid sister; Urd, Belldandy's voluptuous older sister; and Skuld, her sulky younger sister. But despite the contretemps, the bond between Keiichi and Belldandy only grows stronger. Keiichi, like Tenchi or Akito in Nadesico, is initially unprepossessing, but his maladroit exterior conceals a genuinely kind heart. Perhaps because she's a real goddess, rather than a magical girl, Belldandy never whines or grows smarmy; she remains a warm, gentle presence. Voice actors Scott Simpson and Juliet Cesario offer sensitive performances that add to the series' charm and good-natured comedy. Unrated; suitable for ages 12 and up for minor nudity and occasional risqué humor. --Charles Solomon

From the Back Cover
Moonlight and Cherry Blossoms - College freshman Morisato Keiichi gets more than he bargained for when he goes dialing for dinner and gets an unexpected delivery - Belldandy, a real live, honest to goodness GODDESS! Belldandy grants him a wish, and Keiichi decides that what he really needs is a girlfriend just like her. And that's exactly what he gets. The mysterious Ultimate Force that enforces all Wish Contracts comes into play, and Keiichi and Belldandy are now inseparable. Then Keiichi remembers that his dorm has a strict rule: NO WOMEN ALLOWED!
Midsummer Night's Dream - Five months have passed since Morisato Keiichi dialed out for dinner and got a goddess instead, but he still hasn't managed to put the moves on the divine Belldandy. Belldandy's big sister Urd is not amused, and decides to give him some serous make-out advice. The result is a trip to the seashore, where every attempt by Keiichi to advance a base or two with Belldandy goes hilariously askew. Then Urd unleashes her ultimate weapon - the Love Potion!
Burning Hearts On The Road - It's really lonely up in the heavens without your big sisters to keep you company, especially when that means you are stuck with the job of tracking down all the bugs that keep cropping up in the Ultimate Force System. So little Skuld decides to pay her big sister Belldandy a visit. When she hears about the contract that binds Belldandy and Keiichi together, she decides that something must be done! Meanwhile, Keiichi gets stuck with representing the Auto Club in the University Drag Race, only to find out that his sempai, Tamiya, has a secret bet laid down on the outcome. But that's not his only problem. He's got an angry little goddess gunning for him!
